A necklace with Charlotte bead balls

You will always stand out with a distinctive, original piece of jewellery which you have made yourself. We present a tutorial for the creation of a necklace with small balls sewn around with fine cut rocailles in a small size (13/0) which we call Charlotte beads. The process of sewing around the balls requires patience, but the result is well worth it. The combination of charlotte beads and rocailles in varying sizes will enable you to achieve an interesting effect. The use of a hollow lattice tube is also impressive. The crystal rocailles look like small precious stones inside it. As such, your piece of jewellery will be suitable for even the most celebratory of occasions.
Don’t hesitate to try out your own patterns when sewing around the balls and you can also supplement the necklace with earrings or a bracelet. Make use of the wide range of colours and sizes of the beads and seed beads from the PRECIOSA Traditional Czech Beads range.

We wish you much patience and enjoyment during your beadwork with beads and seed beads from the PRECIOSA Traditional Czech Beads brandTM.

Materials & Tools

Other materials

caps (preferably oval), long eye pins, small rings or ovals, fastening (carabiners, an adjusting chain), metal crimp beads

Other materials

miscellaneous: a black-silver, 5 mm wide hollow lattice tube

Tools

scissors, a thin needle, a 0.10 mm nylon line, needle nose pliers, flat nose pliers, snipping pliers, an ordinary wire, tailor’s thread (for sewing up the lattice tube), a rod (a thick needle)

Procedure

Step 1

The balls
Create a total of seven different balls. Use a peyote stitch when sewing them. Start with the basic circle. Regularly add 6x Charlotte beads in several rows. The individual rows interlock. Sew two hemispheres, one with 15 rows and the second with 14 rows. Place a 14 mm ball (FPB) inside. Check the intersection point of the ball’s hole and the holes in the hemispheres. String them onto a rigid rod, for example a thick needle, then place them together and sew them up. After sewing them up, move the needle to the remainder of the line from the second hemisphere and tie three simple knots. Pull the ends into the surrounding Charlotte beads. Pull the beginnings of the lines into the holes in the balls by the initial circle

Step 2

1st row: the initial circle, string and tie together 6x Charlotte beads.
2nd row: sew 6x Charlotte beads above the gaps between the Charlotte beads from the initial row.
3rd row: sew 6x Charlotte beads into the created gaps
4th row: sew 2x CH into each gap (a total of 12x).
5th row: sew in 12x CH.
6th row: sew in 12x CH.
7th row: alternately sew in 1x CH and then 2x CH into the next gap (a total of 18x).
8th row: sew in 18x CH.
9th row: sew in 18x CH.
10th row: sew in 18x CH.
11th row: sew in 18x CH.
12th row: sew in 1x CH, then 1x CH again and 2x CH into the third gap. Repeat along the entire circumference (24x).
13th row: sew in 24x CH.
14th row: sew in 24x CH.
15th row: sew in 24x CH.

Step 3

Stringing
String the balls onto the wire. Place 1x R6 between them. Create loops at the ends. String 1x R6, a metal crimp bead, 1x R9, a metal crimp bead and 16x R9 behind the last ball. Insert the end of the wire back into the stringing starting at the metal crimp bead, tighten the stringing and crimp the metal crimp bead.

Step 4

Completion
Cut 1x about 30 cm of the lattice tube. Sew up one end using the tailor’s thread, wind it around the end several times and sew it in. Start filling the lattice tube with crystal rocailles from the other end using a paper cone. Fill in 25 cm. Also sew up the second end and sew it together with the first one. Shorten the end of the lattice tube. Thread an eye pin between them. String a cap and 1x R6 onto it.
Connect an eye. Add the fastening (a carabiner, adjusting chain). You can create loops in the lattice tube. Choke them with a ring made from 18x R9.
