Cushion sewn with PRECIOSA Terra Intensive seed beads

Sew a cushion with hearts. You can choose several shades of red from the wide-ranging seed bead range sold under the PRECIOSA Traditional Czech Beads™ brand, so every heart can have a different shade. We have used seed beads from the PRECIOSA Terra Intensive Collection: one heart is glossy, one is matt and the third has a colored lining in crystal glass, so that each gives off a different effect.

Material and Tools

Tools

0.50 m of white needlepoint canvas (40 stitches per 10 cm); tailor's thread no. 120 – white, a contrasting thread - stitching (Amann Group Aspo); a thin needle; scissors; a ruler or tape measure; a sewing machine; a 36 cm x 36 cm cushion or with different dimensions; fabric with a width of 50 cm; dressmaker's scissors; pins, an iron

Procedure

Step 1

The hearts

Cut the needlepoint canvas to the size of the pillow. Add several centimetres for the seams. A few more centimetres just to be sure. The dimensions of the needlepoint canvas in the example are 45 cm x 45 cm. The cushion has dimensions of 36 cm x 36 cm. Find the centre of the needlework canvas (the red cross). From there, count off 7 crosses - 14 eyes to the point of the heart (the brown cross).

Step 2

Prepare 2m of thread. Thread it into the eye of the needle. Move the needle to the centre of the thread.

2

Step 3

Start outside the eye on the back of the needlepoint canvas in the body of the future heart and pass the thread through the top back threads in the direction of the point. Create a knot at about the third eye above the point of the heart. Create a loop around and above the thread of the needlepoint canvas. Thread the needle through it twice and tighten. Red thread has been used in the example to make it easier to see.

Step 4

Start embroidering the first cross at the point of the central heart from the R1. Sew the cross into a square, in whose corners there are empty eyes. Pass the thread through from the back to the front of one eye. String 2x R1. Pass the thread diagonally through the opposite eye from the front to the back. Pass the thread through the empty eye from the front to the back. String 1x R1. Move the R1 to the needlepoint canvas. Guide the embroidery thread above the thread between the previous two R1. Pass the thread through the top thread on the front of the needlepoint canvas. Complete the loop above the thread between the R1. Hold the R1 and tighten the embroidery thread. String 1x R1 and pass the thread through the last empty eye in the corner of the square.

Step 5

Sew through the eyes of the neighbouring crosses using the shortest "path". The sewn-through eyes of the neighbouring crosses should lie next to one another. Plan out the embroidery "path" in advance. If the crosses are more distant from one another, guide the embroidery thread along the back by sewing through the threads of the needlework canvas (similarly to as in Step 2). Sew row after row.

5

Step 6

After shortening the thread (a few centimetres more than the length of the needle), sew through several top threads on the back of the body of the future heart. Create a loop around one of the threads. Pass the thread through it twice and tighten. Sew through several more threads and cut off the embroidery thread.

6 / a

Step 7

Prepare another 2m of thread. Stitch and attach it to the rear threads. Continue embroidering the rows. The sewing of one heart will require four 2m lengths of thread. The heart made of R1 is finished.

7 / a

Step 8

Adapt the placement of the hearts to your cushion. In the example, four crosses - 8 eyes - have been counted from the side of the finished R1 heart, i.e. about 2 cm. Start sewing the new heart from the side crosses. The R2 heart on the right-hand side and the R3 heart on the left.

8 / a

Step 9

The threads of the sewn crosses indicate the circumference of the hearts. Definitively adapt the size of the needlepoint canvas to the future cushion cover. Count 18 eyes from the sides of the hearts to the edge (about 4 cm). Measure 15 cm from the curve of the heart to the upper edge. Reckon with 13.5 cm from the points. Mark the circumference with stiches in a contrasting color.

Step 10

Add 1.5-2 cm to the tacked thread for the seams. Cut out the intended dimension. Hem the edge of the needlepoint canvas. Fold the upper and lower edges according to the tacked thread. Also sew the fold.

10 / a

Step 11

Prepare a strip of fabric in the same width as the canvas. The length will correspond to double the height of the needlepoint canvas + the overlap for inserting the cushion. Reckon with 10.5 cm on both sides of the strip of fabric. Hem the edges. Fold 1.5 cm on the narrower edges and then another 4 cm. Sew through the folds in the fabric. Place the centre of the needlepoint canvas on the centre of the strip. Pin the edges. Sew the folds to the upper and lower edges of the canvas using a straight stitch and the folds on the strip of fabric.

11 / a

Step 12

Fold the strip of fabric over the sewn folds in the canvas. The fabric strip will be covered at a length of 8-9 cm. Tack the sides of the fabric and the canvas. Use a straight stitch 2 cm from the edge. Before doing so, check that the side stitching on the canvas corresponds to the future seam. If necessary, adjust the seam position. Remove the tacking. Turn the cover inside out. Insert the cushion.
