Students from the Studio of Textile Design at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague have shown that enlivening work with glass seed beads makes sense.
Students from the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague will present their project with Czech seed beads at this year's Dutch Design Week. It will be held in Eindhoven from 19. to 27.10.2019.
The "National Treasure - Czech Craft is Here" project shows how it is possible to innovate technological methods and to revive traditional, often neglected craft combinations such as textiles and glass bead and seed bead production. The presentation offers new solutions and searches for alternative forms which young designers can then offer traditional cultural cliche. It is a challenge to established market interests.
The displayed artefacts present a wide range of work using glass seed beads. They show the courage to adopt unconventional solutions, to experiment and to combine beads with contemporary textile technologies. The students use the seed beads in digital mechanical embroidery, they combine them with knitwear and they weave them into the fabric, but they have also re-assessed them as a raw material and made new materials from them.
