Dancing Cubes
The Jury's Verdict: attractive use of public space for impressive, interactive communication
The luminous outlines of glass cubes lit up the plaza of the National Theatre from October 15th to 18th at the 2015 Signal Festival. The DANCING CUBES exhibit, created for the 3rd year of the Signal Festival, was yet another successful piece designed by Studio VACEK & SMID for PRECIOSA Ornela. The colourful, illuminated silhouettes of 'moving' cubes were made from PRECIOSA Traditional Czech Glass™ glassmaking rods.
The interactive Dancing Cubes were not located in the National Theatre’s plaza by accident. Surrounded by theatres from all sides, the display invited visitors in to witness a show where they were not merely part of the audience, but direct participants. Through music and light, the large glass forms set the performing professional dancers in motion, drawing in spectators and passers-by to join in as well. The interconnecting cube outlines were made of high quality, colourful drawn glass rods made in Desna at PRECIOSA Ornela, a one-of-a-kind international company itself. The rods were heated and shaped into moulds to create outlines that measured almost two and half meters in length. Combined, they created the outlines of the cubes which then were software programmed to light up the night sky. In addition to working with light and shadows, the design was conceived to work with energy and rhythm, as well as to work together with the facade of the New Stage of the National Theatre. The design also played on the metaphors of a performance (a play) and games (playing dice).
After the Signal Festival the cubes traveled north, where they welcomed visitors at Jablonec nad Nisou’s Eurocentre on the occasion of the traditional January Made in Jablonec fashion show (2016). The cubes are next scheduled to dance in 2017 for the International Triennial of Glass and Jewelry – JABLONEC 2017.
