Midsummer Night’s Dream

Difficulty: 4
Technique: crocheting

Crocheted bracelet

If you have not yet tried the technique of crocheting with seed beads, you can still at least try out the technique according to this relatively complicated tutorial. The first two steps include instructions designated for those who have never tried this technique before. Thanks to the use of different shapes and sizes of seed beads from the PRECIOSA Traditional Czech Beads brand, you will create an enchanting flattened tube which will twist into a spiral by itself. Preciosa Ornela wishes you much enjoyment when working with beads.

Tools

crocheting yarn, a 1.0 mm crocheting hook, connecting rings, a Big Eye needle or a stringing needle and thread, a 5 x 16 mm end piece for a flat ribbon in the old bronze colour, a carabiner, rings, a chain, a pendant in the old bronze colour, scissors, flat nose pliers

Procedure

Step 1

The tube is crocheted using the technique of diagonal columns (I call it that, because the seed beads lie diagonally in the finished tube). In order to illustrate this better, we will explain the crocheting technique using an example of a tube consisting of 10 seed beads. You need knitting yarn, a 2 mm hook and 6/0 rocailles. First string the seed beads onto the yarn. If you do not have a special Big Eye needle, pass a fine line or a thread through the eye of the stringing needle and create a loop through which you should thread the crocheting yarn and string ca 40 – 60 seed beads. Form a basic crocheting loop and then 10 chain loops. There will be a total of 11 loops, one more than the number of seed beads in the circumference of the tube (figures 1a and 1b). Then connect the chain into a circle. (figure 1c)

Step 2

Further crochet a ca 1 cm long tube without any seed beads (figure 2a) which will be used for attaching the fastening. Then start adding the seed beads. Move the seed beads as closely as possible to the crocheting, then take hold of the yarn behind the seed bead and make another short column. As such, you will have the first column with an added seed bead (figures 2b and 2c.

Step 3

Continue in the same way until you have crocheted around all 10 seed beads (figure 3a). Then place the hook under the yarn which is located under the next seed bead, move the following seed bead and make a short column after it. In this way, crochet a spiral until all the strung seed beads have been used. At the end of the seed bead tube, crochet another ca 1cm of the tube from seed beads (figures 3b and 3c).

Step 4

If you have already practised diagonal crocheting, you can now start the “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” project. This spiral tube is crocheted from 16 seed beads. String ca 3.5 m of seed beads on the yarn (this should enable you to create a tube which is about 18 cm long). String the seed beads according to the following pattern:
2x R10 (23980 - black), 1x R10 (17070 topaz), 2 R10 (23980), 1x R8 (17070), 1x R8 (23980), 1x R8 (17070), 2x R10 (23980), 1x R10 (17070), 2x R10 (23980), 1x R8 (17070), 1x R8 (23980), 1x R8 (17070), 2x R10 (23980), 1x R10 (17070), 2x R10 (23980), 1x R8 (17070), 1x SH, 1x R8 (17070), 2x R10 (23980), 1x R10 (17070), 2x R10 (23980), 1x R8 (17070), 1x SH, 1x R8 (17070),… Once you have strung the entire pattern, start stringing the pattern from the beginning again with two black mat R10 and keep stringing until you have a stringing with a length of ca 3.5 m.

Step 5

Make a basic crocheting loop and 16 chain loops as described above, join them into a circle and crochet a tube from the yarn (figure 5a). Then crochet further while adding seed beads. The tube will flatten itself out and twist into a spiral thanks to the seed beads of various shapes and sizes (figsures 5b and 5c).

Step 6

When the seed bead tube has the required length, crochet a section of the tube without seed beads, cut the yarn and sew in the rest. Connect the ribbon end piece to the tube so that the yarn is not visible. If the section of the tube without any seed beads is too long, you can shorten it with scissors and glue the yarn so that it does not fray (figure 6a). Proceed in the same way at the other end. Attach the fastening using the rings and the decorative chain, if it is necessary, and you are finished (figure 6b).
